The binding reproduced above is shown at near to full size, depending on your monitor settings (full size at 600x800) and is about 29.25cm tall. The original image is found in the British Library Database of Bookbinding, and must be one of their older photos as the spine is included. The binding has been photographed with a ruler included in the picture and thus we are able to digitally reproduce the binding at its true size. Unfortunately the photo did not include all of the binding, I have reconstructed the small part was missing (see Virtual Bookbinding). This is a Derome binding as we can see by the numerous identical tool imprints which we have observed on the previous page. The spine is of particular interest as most reproductions do not show the full spine. Although very worn we can still see most of the important central fleuron, while the palettes at the bottom of the spine are the same as the one shown here at the top. |
You never know when you might want to check a palette, I have reconstructed the palette shown below from bits and pieces of all three blurred and worn examples, this will give only a general idea of the form and is not to be considered as 100% accurate |
This is a large binding and the photo is limited to a certain size out of necessity when trying to catalogue thousands of items. Thus enlarged details are not spectacular however we find some new tools used in the decoration of this binding, these tools will lead us further in our search |
In Comparative Diagram 1, we see an enlarged detail from near middle right, here there are some small tools that have been linked together to form a central floral structure. A single tool has been used twice to form the stem, stamped in a back to back fashion. I discovered this tool in another Database binding. |

The binding reproduced above is shown at near to full size or a small bit larger than actual size depending on your monitor settings (600x800) and is about 20 cm tall. The original image is found in the British Library Database of Bookbinding, the quality of the picture is better in this smaller sized binding, however the quality of the imprints seems poor, which is why the person who entered the Database details above, added the cryptic note-? Derome le jeune?. This binding may be an example of what Macchi was referring to when he says that the bindings of Derome were not all of the same quality... the most expensive, but skilful craftsman of his time; always in demand so that he had to be helped by other binders, which explains the differing quality of his bindings. As this binding was made for George III, King of Great Britain, perhaps Derome employed an English binder on this example. Whatever the case the imprints are strangely blurred. On the next page we will look at a Derome binding where the imprints are of a higher quality. |
