On this page I want to create a virtual roulette AE a 1 with which we will proceed to creating virtual bookbindings for the atelier I B bindings for which we have only the rubbings of Denise Gid, (Catalogue des Reliures Françaises estampées à froid dans la bibliothèque Mazarine, Paris, 1984). In the Comparative Diagrams 1 - 3, I have measured the width of the AE a 1 roulette, taking my measurements from an ultra accurate 1200 dpi scan. Using three different sections of our example three binding, we find that the width of the roulette is 2.35 cm.This is not as easy to measure as you might think the filets often crop the edge of the imprint and or there can be distortions and shrinkage in the leather that can give narrower measurements, generally however 2.35 cm. is close to the actual physical roulette width.

Then I needed to find a complete AE a 1 imprint this was not easy and the choices limited I decided on a strip from our example 1 binding. The imprint was complete but not exactly straight, after some adjustments I finally have my strip it is slightly wider at 2.37 as I wanted to be sure to have everything, all details complete, and just a slight hint of a border.
